Nautilus are – for many – a very well-known name in the fitness industry. They are always working on their expansion plans and in that connection they have created another new brand called Universal. The aim for this brand is to produce affordable cardio machines that are suitable for those who wish to use their elliptical trainers and other machines at home.
As a result of this, they have produced a brand new elliptical machine; the Universal E40 Elliptical Trainer. There shouldn’t be any doubt that this is a very basic looking machine compared to some of the top-of-the-range models from brands like Sole Fitness, Precor and ProForm. It still does appear to be a pretty good buy if you are on a budget and aren’t interested in spending upwards of 1000 USD or 2000 USD for an elliptical trainer.
Robust and durable construction
The Universal E40 is made from a durable stainless steel frame. The elliptical trainer stands approximately 64.5 inches tall and 56.0 inches in length. It has a weight of around 90 pounds when it has been fully assembled. Universal has chosen to equip the E40 with caster wheels on the front which allows you to easily move it from place to place or from room to room, if it is needed.
The assembly process is quite easy and you should be able to use the machine for the first time within a very short amount time after the package has arrived at your house. You should be aware that the assembly will be a bit easier if you have a large room with sufficient space, as it makes it possible to spread out the different parts and create a great overview of the different parts, which will make them easier to find when needed.
The machine has a 17-inch stride length. You can also be sure that the robust elliptical trainer will stay rock solid once you install it. You won’t be able to feel any kind of movement or wobble when the machine is in use – not even when you are using it at the highest resistance. The machine may not be the fanciest looking model on the market, but it doesn’t look bad either. It’s quite simple and modern looking.
Comes with perfectly placed controls
The control panel on this machine is also very minimalistic and it is also very highlighted by the large LCD console. This LCD console will display the information that you are tracking (time, pulse, RPM, pulse, speed, distance, heart rate, resistance level, course profile). The screen is very organized and the different icons and numbers will be very easily visible.
You should be aware that there is no backlight on the LCD console. This means, that in a really bright room, you may will end up finding some of the data is not clear. Universal E40 is an elliptical trainer that has been designed to accommodate people up to 275 lbs. in weight. It has also been equipped with a very ergonomically designed frame, comfortable padded hand grips and also a wide and soft foot rest.
Universal E40 will be delivered with hand grips that have in-built pulse sensors that makes it very easy for you to track your vitals. It also has a built-in speaker to which you can connect your smartphone, MP4 player and such with an AUX plug-in slot. This makes it possible to listen to your favorite music while working hard on the elliptical machine.
When you are working out on your Universal E40 elliptical trainer, you have the opportunity to choose between 8 different magnetic resistance levels and you will also be able to choose between seven different kinds of preset workout programs like Mountains, Fun Rides and Challenges. You can easily toggle between the different settings – even when you are using the machine. The Universal E40 has also been equipped with a cup holder and a magazine rack.
It can provide a great full body workout
There shouldn’t be any doubt that the most important part of the Universal E40 is the fantastic full body workout it is able to provide for you. Even when you are using the machine at the most basic settings, the machine allows you to hit both your thighs, glutes, hamstrings, core, arms and shoulders. The elevated settings do only make the exercise provided by the elliptical trainer even more grueling.
There are no uphill or downhill settings, and the climber will be flat in all settings. This isn’t something you should be worried about as the different difficulty levels will be able to makeup for the lack of this feature. The 17-inch stride and the build quality will be providing a very smooth experience throughout the whole workout. It is also very silent and this is one of the very reasons that it has become so popular.
Positive things about the Universal E40
Some elliptical machines can end up causing pain in your knees and hips, but with the E40 this isn’t something to be worried about. A lot of people with existing joint problems have reported no problems at all with this particular model. The elliptical trainer has a stride length of 17 inches which is why many people have commented on the fact, that the machine is very comfortable and also very smooth and quiet in operation.
As described before the machine features a range of workout options, as you can choose between 8 magnetic resistance levels. Unlike a lot of the other elliptical trainers on the market and in this price range, this model also features 7 workout programs as well, which includes both manual, random and interval programs. The moving arms will make sure that you also work your arms and abs muscles as well, and therefore the machine doesn’t just provide a low-impact lower body workout.
It should also be said, that this machine comes with a very good quality LCD display that will display a lot of useful information. You will always be able to see information such as time, speed, distance, calories burned and RPM. If you place your hands on the built-in pulse sensors that can be found on both of the inner handlebars, you will also be able to see your pulse rate on the LCD display.
E40 has also been equipped with some decent sized speakers that makes you able to play music directly from your phone or your table. The reading rack on the console makes it very easy for you to read a book or a magazine whilst you workout on the elliptical machine. The overall strength of this machine is suitable for anyone up to 275 pounds, which is quite impressive for a machine in this price range.

Product Dimensions / Weight
This elliptical machine has a quite compact size that makes it possible for almost everybody to find place for it. The exact dimensions are as following (in inches): 56 (L) x 23.7 (W) x 64.5 (H) when it is fully assembled. It weighs approximately 90 pounds.
Negative things about the Universal E40
There isn’t many drawbacks and negative things about this machine, but as this is a Universal E40 Elliptical Trainer Review, we would like to point out a few minor issues with the machine. One slight issue is the reading rack; to be able to place either a book or a magazine on the reading rack, you will inevitably end up covering the display screen. This means, that you won’t be able to monitor your performance without having to move your book or magazine.
Even if you aren’t using the reading rack, it can be hard for you to monitor your performance on the LCD display, as it isn’t a backlit display. This means that you can end up struggling to real all of the numbers on the display, if you are using the machine in a room that is fairly dark. You should also be aware that the calorie counter isn’t always completely accurate, but most of the time it is, according to some users.
The elliptical trainer has been equipped with a set of speakers. There shouldn’t be any doubt that this is a very nice feature, but some people have said that the speakers are not particularly impressive. On the other side, you can’t have too high expectations about the sound quality on a machine in this price range.
It should also be said, that this is a machine with a stride length of 17 inches. The stride length is fixed and cannot be adjusted. Therefore this machine may not be the most suitable one for taller people with long legs, as they often will be in need of a bigger stride length.
The final thoughts
It can be quite a difficult task to find a good quality elliptical trainer that can be bought for a reasonable price, but the Universal E40 Elliptical Trainer brings you excellent value for money overall. It has some very minor flaws as mentioned above, but overall it’s very great value for money.
There is a few reasons that this is a good purchase. For example, it is because it has a wide variety of different workout options, but it’s also because it’s very easy on the joints and runs both smoothly and quietly throughout the whole workout. The elliptical machine is still strong enough to support a weight of up to 275 pounds.
Universal has also chosen to equip the machine with a decent LCD console that features both a reading rack and built-in speakers. That makes you able to entertain yourself during your workout by either reading, using an iPad or just using the speakers to listen to some music. It would – for some people – have been nice to be able to adjust the stride length. Really tall people will have trouble using this elliptical, as it simply isn’t possible to adjust the stride length.
Overall this machine appears to be a good quality machine, it has received a lot of positive customer reviews and is – without any doubt – one of the most popular elliptical trainers in this price range – at has been exactly that for a fair amount of time now. If you are looking for your first elliptical trainer, then the U40 from Universal is a very good choice.
